SonCafé is the hottest new ensemble making an impact on New York City's Latin music scene. As energizing as a first cup of coffee in the morning, the group's engaging and highly danceable repertoire is mainly based on "salsa pura" and "son cubano." Under the accurate direction of renowned band leader/timbalero Ralph Irizarry, the eight-piece powerhouse is integrated by a select group of experienced sideman/studio musicians. SonCafé's exciting novel sound and powerful delivery encompasses a blend of diverse influences and brings to life echoes of such respected aggregations as the legendary Sonora Matancera from Cuba and Puerto Rico's Sonora Ponceña, all combined with the best of the typical New York swinging sounds. SonCafé's lead vocal role is skillfully shared by two excellent singers, the seasoned Jorge Maldonado who will more than please audiences with his impeccable rendition of familiar tunes and the surprising newcomer, Elsa Ozuna who will astound crowds with her very personal interpretations. |

Jorge Maldonado, a veteran of many groups and recording sessions, has under his belt long stints with Sonora Matancera, Conjunto Libre, Charanga America and several other local groups. Elsa Ozuna, the new vocalist and the winner of the "Festival de la Cancion OTI" in 1991, is also SonCafé's best kept secret. She possesses a vocal prowess that could knock anyone off their feet. Her very personal approach bears a definite resemblance to a cross between the styles of the revered Celia Cruz and the mythical La Lupe. In addition, the ability of these two talented singers to blend their voices in a duo and deliver as one, lends an amazing dimension to the group. SonCafe currently has two CDs in the marketplace, the debut CD entitled Bailando con Azucar and the all medley's CD Tributo.
